Salmon
muscle their way upstream to spawn. Waterfalls
plummet from cliffs, down fern-lined ravines and
across gold-laced boulders high above town.
Eagles soar, rusted mining-era
ruins dot lushly forested trails and the Mendenhall
Glacier continues to spill icebergs in the wake of
its retreat.
When you
get to Juneau, you've arrived somewhere out of the
ordinary.
Rock,
ice, water and forest - this little city is
surrounded by pristine, accessible, yet sometimes
harsh and unforgiving wilderness. Summers, with
their seemingly endless days and relatively mild
weather, don't hint of the dank, dark winters that
residents endure.
Often
referred to as cosmopolitan for its size, Juneau
carves it place in the world on a small strip of
land between mountains and sea. A creator's
paradise, the town is home to artists, actors, poets
and writers who draw their inspiration from the
untamed land and sometimes untamed people of Alaska.
