The Marriot Company would begin much
like many of the great companies of today, in a simpler time, around
the turn of the 20th century, by a young man named John Williard
Marriot, who would set the
standards that have been carried on to this day. John once stated
that, “a man should keep on
being constructive, and do constructive things.” And that early
philosophy would lead him,
support him and motivate him for his entire life, helping him to
build one of the finest
institutions in the world today. Young “Bill” would help his family
raise sugar beets and sheep on
their small family farm, back then, learning very fast that he would
have to learn to rely on his
own judgement and initiative to accomplish any feat that he chose to
complete. He said that it
would be his father that taught him what the responsibility of a man
should be, by allowing him
to develop his own ideas, while instructing him in what needed to be
done. He would have to
discover how to do the job, since he already knew what it was that
he needed to get done. John
entered into business at an age when most children were still going
to high school or some other
type of school, and his life began. He would get the help of his
younger brothers and sisters and
raise a crop of lettuce which he sold for $2000 and he promptly gave
the money to his father.
His father would send him, all alone, to San Francisco with 3000
head of sheep to sell. It would
be a great beginning for him, but he realized quickly that an
education was desparately needed
to get more from the kind of life that he wanted. Working in any
occupation that brought him
money, he would finish school and eventually get a college degree.
Naturally, he would think
beyond his degree and made plans to start his own business. That
first venture would be an A &
W Root Beer stand in Washington, DC. That initial start would become
the great company that it
is today, as John worked, slept and dreamed about his business,
living life each and every day, to
its fullest, making every day count, no matter how difficult or
trying it would be. The company
today, has been named one of the top 100 Best Companies to work for,
according to Fortune
magazine annual rankings, moving up on the list to occupy the 71st
spot, and only one of thirteen
that has been on the list since it was started in 1998. It is the
second highest ranked company in
the nation, with 100,000 or more associates, as it continues its
standards that was started by
John Marriot those many decades ago. It will continue to grow,
expand and deliver the best
accommodations in the world, with the finest group of people that
care about each other, their
company and the position that they were brought in for. |
