There is a lot of history with Whitehorse...essentially with its association with the Klondike Gold Rush at the end of the 19th century. But Whitehorse was merely a place to rest, the primary goal was Dawson City. Whitehorse played a vital role in navigation of Yukon...first as an Eastern junction of the railway leading to Alaska. Then as a busy port for passenger boats and barges on the Yukon River. It also served as a base during the Second World War for the building of the Canol Pipeline and the Alaskan Highway.
Today, Whitehorse is the cultural and governmental centre of the Yukon Territory. Visitors to the area enjoy hiking, skiing, canoeing, mountaineering, dogsledding, and hot springs bathing. Whitehorse is very cold for the long Winters but summers can be actually hot.

The Yukon Territory has a population of only 31,000, and 23,000 of those live in Whitehorse. Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon and is a fairly young. It was established only in the spring of 1900, 2 years after the stampeders had entered Dawson City. Whitehorse, on the banks of the Yukon River, is the center of the Territory, and it became the capital in 1953. Dawson City slowly faded out along with its gold.
