Yellowknife is Canada's most northerly city...and the capital of Northwest Territory. It is situated on the north shore of Great Slave Lake. Originally inhabited by the Chipewyan Yellowknife Dene peoples, whites finally settled in the area in the mid 1930's, after gold was found on the lakeshores. The second gold rush in the 40's brought bordellos and gambling dens, and bars...and permanently put Yellowknife on the map. The old town of Yellowknife still exists today...but now attracts a younger people just out of college looking for high-paying job in the public sector.
