The lush prairie lands around the this original settlement drew tremendous beef herds, many of them from overgrazed U.S. ranches. Calgary grew into a cattle and meatpacking metropolis. When World War II ended, the city numbered barely 100,000. In one decade the pace and complexion of the city changed due to the oil boom. The population increased at an incredible rate. In the 70's much construction was added to the skyline. New office high rises, hotel blocks, and shopping centers were created. In the mid-1990s, the oil market heated up again. Calgary has a large skyline featuring dozens of business towers topping 40 stories. But the city doesn't seem urban at all. Calgary retains the atmosphere of a much smaller, friendlier town.
